Including 100,000 ha of heavy damage (over 70% of production), over 40,000 ha reduced from 30-70% output, the remaining area is slightly damaged, reduced by less than 30% compared with normal output.
“Thus, the Mekong Delta this spring crop is reduced about 600,000 to 700,000 tons of rice,” Trung said.
According to Trung, in recent years, each year Vietnam produces about 7-8 million tons of rice for export.
Therefore, this deficit, if any, affects only the quantity of rice exported but not the food security in the country.
Moreover, according to Trung, food production can be compensated by two end-of-year crops: summer-autumn and autumn-winter when weather conditions are favorable and rice prices increase.
